So much to love in this post!! I’ve also been trying to break up with my TBR. My TBR has become “book club books and what’s on my shelf.” We’ll see if I stick with it!
I love this! I’m definitely guilty of feeling pressured to read seasonally and then feeling guilty when I want to read something else and then feeling like I missed out on my seasonal reads. It’s a viscous cycle!
I wish I could double like this!! I relate so much-- the TBR piles, the guilt! I've made a similar commitment and just weeded through a TON of books I've been hoarding with the intent to read them and never getting to them. I plan to approach my remaining unread books with a sense of shopping my shelves-- maybe involve a yummy drink or treat and treat it like a trip to the bookstore-- browsing the books in my collection and landing on whatever strikes me instead of what I think I want to read or should read.
I LOVE the idea of incorporating a little treat! It's like coffee and a little shop (my favorite past-time) at home. I'm so glad this resonated with you - and that I'm not the only one!
I, too, am a mood reader. And I'm trying to move away from the whims of my reading desires and creating some sense of books I want to read in 2025. Specifically from more diverse authors and books to challenge my mind. I'm currently reading Mary Oliver's poetry, Little Women, and a few ARCs from NetGalley and I feel as though I am opening myself up to new thoughts and ideas by creating a more defined list.
Whatever gets us to our reading goals is the most important part!
OK, you have inspired me to free myself! One of my weird “rules” is you can’t start a new book until you have finished the last one. I start a lot of books (usually for book club) that I don’t end up finishing, either because I went to book club and I know the ending or because they didn’t capture me, usually a combination of both (if I really like it, I mostly finish it before book club). So….I don’t read very much anymore! Instead I will scroll on my ipad, play games, work a puzzle, make a stew. It bothers me that I read so little because I was a voracious reader in my younger years, and I was an English major, for God’s sake. So I am going to try to consciously get over my OCD-related difficulty starting a new book when I haven’t finished the previous one(s). The only time I break this rule now is for the next book club book, because that feels like a duty, creating a long line of half-read book club books on my kindle….but from now on, if a book speaks to me, I’m just going to start reading it. And I will think of you!
Yes, I love this for you!!! Our brains are so weird, ha! I am not very good at stopping books that I’m not loving. I wish you so much luck in this endeavor. Positive vibes only for reading in 2025!

Yes, same!! We’re in it together! ❤️
Maybe this is the year when I will finally allow myself to DNF books I don’t like!
DNF-ing - terrifying and freeing.
Yessss you can do it!

It really is! Why do we do this to ourselves??

Yes, this sounds amazing! I love learning all the different ways people approach their reading.

This is a great list of goals. I love the mashed potatoes analogy!
It’s such a good one! I’ve used it so much since I first heard it!
